If you're heading away to the Mediterranean and looking for a chillout album to accompany you, Washed Out could be the answer. The vehicle of Ernest Greene, they make wonderfully lush music that the listener can dive in to, with great big washes of synth sound, longing vocals and soft choruses with plenty of reverb. If it all sounds a bit Beloved-by-numbers it isn't, as the songs have enough individuality and poignancy to stand on their own, at times weightless but then reassuringly strong when the drums kick in. The overall pitch is predominantly that of a slow disco number, but when the title track finishes with what can only be described as the sonic equivalent of golden rain, it's impossible to resist.
