Fil OK is half of the awesome Atomizer, currently doing damage with their 'Je Suis Lesbien' single. He's set up OK Music to release his solo tackle, starting with this contagious kneesup which manages to slip a Brazilian carnival into the convoluted roller coaster of electro and masturbating robots. The mixes all add extra dimensions: Touche manages to inject classical melodies and ravey riffs at the same time! New Scandinavian engineer Blende goes for the peak time screamer with a climactic dro...
Trying to follow a number one pop hit is no easy feat, but in 'Handle Me', Robyn stands every chance of matching the success of 'With Every Heartbeat'. The commercial mixes come from the always-reliable Soulseekerz, while Chewy Chocolate Cookies (great name guys) go a dubbed out route and Williams a sparser deeper direction. There's also Otrtzroka on an electro tip, and a Bjorn Yttling (from Peter Bjorn & John) mix on the CD too. The one thing you can say about the Robyn is that she defies p...
Nick Hook is back on new label Jeepers! which he co-runs with Lee Morrison (Wallop, Alex Lee). Based on a mantra-like vocal (The Funky Music), the original of is a groovy affair with a slight dubby feel, a bouncy electro b-line, robot bleeps and an eventful structure that keeps you interested all the way (also Funky Dub). Hooks First Life partner Martin Sharp provides a progged-up re-rub.5 Out Of 5Reviewed By: Jerry Bouthier...
This label's on a roll too, here unleashing Sweden's Olle Corneer, who first impressed in 2005 with his Songs For Good Lives album on Malmo's Deeplay Soultec label followed by a string of hot twelves, including last year's Gigolos debut 'Saved in Dadaland'. In these musical cross-dressing times, pigeonholing is tricky but if Electro now means forward-thinking electronic music with a certain attitude [In fact just like techno!] you could plant the title track in that box with its mad voices, skew...
This will be digital only - a shame because the four tracks are atmospheric mood pieces, all around the 110bpm mark, which work spacey strings around synthetic space melodies over snarling funk undercurrents to often captivating effect. Although I consider their debut album to be one of the year's best, this might just be the best thing Nag Nag Nag duo Johnny Slut and Fil OK have ejaculated from their volcanic creative loins to date. Inspired by French surrealist maverick Pierre Molinier, the painter/photographer who broke down visual sexual taboos to much outrage, the lead cut rides gloriously into the space-disco aboard a mighty Moroderesque starburst of throbbing sonics and breathy vocals. The dub on the download rams home t...
With vocals from Yolanda (Massive Attack, Bugz In The Attic) Daddio, the opening track from 30 Hzs forthcoming album Electric Sheep, gets a full release with several mixes to cling your teeth into. Sticking to breakbeats Miles Dyson gives it an electro flavour whilst Klaus Hill takes the tech-funk rout, best of the lot is Trevor Loveys jackin reinterpretation though. A dub and radio edit complete the package.4 Out Of 5Reviewed By: Jerry Bouthier...
Here is Code Red again, the imprint with Thommy Davis & Dj Spen at the controls. Jack The Trax mix by the pair is pure jackin bliss indeed. Raw, stripped-down chunky 4/4 that raves up without sounding crass, probably what Robbie Riviera would love to sound like. Again large doses of Todd Terrys grittiness, a bit of Chicago/Farley and hop, heres a killer techy dub that will cause mayhem on the dancefloor.5 Out Of 5Reviewed By: Jerry Bouthier...
Black Affair is the new project from the ever prolific Steve Mason, best known for his work with The Beta Band and various solo projects including King Biscuit Time. 'Tak! Attack!' is Black Affair's debut, and the first thing that comes to mind is how much Steve Mason sounds like the Human League's Phil Oakey, making the big synth pop riffs of 'Tak Attack' sound unashamedly and totally nostalgic eighties. But listen a little more carefully and there‚s some clever housey doings going on as well. ...
The Satin Peaces are a new outfit from Detroit, they are over here in the UK and on tour with The Go Team, promoting and celebrating their debut release. 'Well Well Well Well' is jam packed with great hooks & riffs to die for, that ride on a feel good stomping beat, complementing and driving the charming vocals of frontman George Morris, into an explosive sing-a-long anthem. On the flip you'll find 'Nothing We Can Do (Demo)', which is a psychedelic toe tapping strummer, with traces of early...
Eddy Temple Morris and Tom Bellamy are Losers!. Eddy is already well known as 'The Remix' presenter on XFM and here puts into practice on vinyl what he has been championing on his radio show for many a year! Rage Against The Machine gets the Dance / Rock treatment, adding big balled 4/4 drums and a few well thought out edits, chopping and changing between hip hop and near d n' b tempos, prepare to mosh! Gossip get a suitably electro synth re work, again staying true to original but with added el...
The legendary d n' b label Ram have decided to release their first ever non D n' B release and boy is this something extra special and a big fat breath of fresh air. Part of a D n' B 4 track E.P, this is Culture Shock's first foray into the world of 130 ish bpm and if this is anything to go by, he'd better come with some more, quick sharp! Sounding all angular and robotic in a Daft Punk / Hacker kinda way complete with bleepy blips and searing electro synths this is pounding electrocuted 4/4 me...

Pete And The Pirates do quintessentially English indie pop with a punky art school edge. ‘Knots’ has got hit written all over it, packed with jangly hooks and catchy riffs, plus a chanting chorus. „I fear my heart might stop just as I reach the top. I don’t wanna drop, my head’s in knots. Erase myself I‚m free to hit the rock’. Over on the flip you‚ll find ‘The Wrong Man’, an excellent tune that harks back to early Adam And The Ants. A great double header, what a 7’ single should be.5 Out Of 5Re...

Basile Fanon, the mastermind behind the act and label of the same name, is equally talented at making the sort of records you instantly feel at home with, crafting irritably catchy instrumentals that just reek of crossover potential. ‘Freedom’ is no different, and sticks to the tried-and-tested adage of less-is-more: the balance of delicate chords, shuffling percussive loops and floating melodies makes for an irresistible recipe. As if the opening bars of ‘Born Slippy’ and Robert Miles’ Children...

Plenty of mixes here to ensure The Young Punx garner the airplay time, managing to press the electro, indie and pop buttons in varying degrees, and it's a catchy song as well, to it's credit. The action is definitely in the remixed format for louder speakers, though, and it's tough to choose between Olav Basoki's nine minute plus tracky workout that's got that terrace vibe, powerhouse drums and some effectively placed drops building the tension, or Don Diablo's slightly tougher dub that rocks i...

Everyone’s had a go at punky electro but not all do it as convincingly as Dee Plume (vocals & guitar) and Sue Denim (vocals & bass) aka Robots in Disguise. Lifted from their third album ‘We’re In The Music Biz’, which was recorded in Berlin by Chris Corner (Sneaker Pimps), ‘The Sex Has Made Me Stupid’ comes in lots of (unequal) versions and mixes. At times the pair’s entertaining duets almost feels like an enjoyable alternative version of Tatu.4 Out Of 5Reviewed By: JERRY BOUTHIER...

Their debut ‘You Are Here’ won best album at the 2006 International Breakbeat Awards and now the follow-up ‘Sex, Drugs & Blah Blah Blah’ is about to land. ‘Papercuts’ with full-time Hooligan Justin Berry on vocals takes you back to electroclash only with energetic breakbeats added. This is loud, with lots of irreverent synths and attitude and still fun and engaging. ‘Weed’ is of a totally different ilk, a more introspective, thoughtful vibe yet eventful and quite epic.4 Out Of 5Reviewed By: ...

Ian Dury was an amazing wordsmith who happened to drop a song called 'Sex & Drugs 'N' Roll' 30 years ago which got adopted by lowest common denominator factions who simply took the title as a hedonist's anthem. The Slyde duo have made some great, multi-genred floor-killers recently, such as 'Krunk' and 'Vibrate To This', now they've bagged the two words from Ian's classic, fed them into the laptop and made him sound like a chipmunk as vocals shout punkily and dirty Motley Crue riffs grunt. Don’t expect much previously unreleased material on this new Fatboy comp but a handful of classic reworks of his singles from a well-known bunch. On the four-track sampler Chemical Brothers’ remix of ‘Song For Shelter’ sees Tom & Ed truly at their finest rockin’ techno with live drums, fx-a-gogo and a seriously manic pace, Beastie Boys’ Mike D & Ad Rock take on ‘Praise On’ for a psyched-out laidback affair, Justice bring on their top restless funk to ‘Don’t Let The Man Get You Down’ and ...
