Lion Club

Yo dudes, Converse Music announcing your new on-line documentary series ‘Journey’ which is following the antics of your live shows, backstage shenanigans and what happens on the road – plus your music… who out of your band is the most craziest on the road and what has been the maddest ‘on tour’ moment?
“We’re all mentally unstable in our own ways, Lewis is mental in a classic old man sense, Alex in a reckless, Matt in a destructive yet peaceful, and Tommy in a influencial – if you get me? We all like to be a little extravagent when it comes to having fun. Say no more. Horse tranquilizers and screaming sheeps at 4AM mixed with projectial vomit and Lord of the Rings.”

You are being backed by the infamous, and fantastic Sean McLusky – one of the true dance music club pioneers who has set dancefloors alight with his nights’ for 20 years. What’s he like to work with?
“He’s the cool Dad who your friends love and want to have sex with. He’s a charming man who’s always on the end of the phone to a panicing lead singer.”

You say that your sound is “a unique melancholy sound’ – what sort of musicians did you all grow up to listening to? What people influenced you…
“I don’t think we’ve ever described ourselves as that to be quite honest really, but yeah i guess it could be true maybe? We all grew up listening to a lot of similar music I think. A few artists to name – Robert Smith, Peter Hook, Thurston Moore, Roachford, Morrissey, Lauren Hill and a lot of other people. I don’t think these really reflect in our sound, but it’s what our parents forced upon us when we were kids. Bands like U2, The Smiths, M83, The Cure, The Pet Shop Boys, Tears for Fears and Interpol are what heavily influence us now I guess, but we don’t really adopt any of their features – just enjoy listening to their music.”

Who is the best live band out there at the moment?
“Coldplay followed closely by Muse – we aspire to any band that can produce a performance of that calabar.”

So, Lewis, Matt, Alex and Thomas – you’ve got the vocals, Claps, Bells, Roland MC-505, drums, Bass and all sorts going on in a brilliant group – how did you all meet in the first place?
“Tom was a later addition to the gang, coming in through his like mindedness to professionalism, but originally a mixture of school, football, and family friends.”

Who do you think is the best band of all time and also best album?
“The Rolling Stones for best band, purely because Jagger was gorgeous. And best album, ‘A Rush of Blood to the Head’ – Coldplay. A completely timeless album with such huge tracks on it.”

The best vocalist of all time?
“Ian Curtis from Joy Division”.

What venue would be your perfect place to play and who would you be honoured to have as support?
“The Royal Albert Hall definitely. A free show to loyal fans and friends supported by the amazing M83 feat. Brandon Flowers maybe?”

What other Converse Music artists do you think are special you are bonded with?
“We like Bombay Bicycle Club a lot.”

What’s with the name?
“It works?”

Elvis or The Beatles?
“Elvis because Paul McCartny’s a twat.”

And finally, what’s next from Lion Club in 2009?
“A single release followed by an album along with an onslaugh of aggressive agents typing rapidly in sync with booking agents bursting vains with labels weeping from the devastating news that we’ve broken America. Hopefully if things develop correctly, an orchestra would seem appropriate to back us on our larger tour dates. This isn’t just a band, it’s a project that will develop until the day it’s seized. We’ve a dance album ready and we’ve got a film to make, we want to own nightclubs around the world and change the way people thing about life.
